The Republican presidential candidate-Donald Trump has banned the Washington Post from covering his political campaign—by revoking their press credentials.
According to Trump, the WashingtonPost is “phony and dishonest” and as such he does not need their damaging coverage of his campaign.
Trump in a Facebook post said he has decided to do so because of the newspaper’s “incredibly inaccurate coverage” of his campaign. And even before this post, he had earlier provided on Facebook some clues as to why he wanted to punish the Washington Post. He said the newspaper was not being honest because it used a headline for his recent speech that said “Donald Trump suggests President Obama was involved with Orlando shooting.”
In a statement released after the ban was announced, the Trump campaign team mentioned that the Washington Post “covers Mr. Trump very inaccurately,” and as such Trump does not want to work with a news outlet that constantly “put its need for clicks above journalistic integrity.”
But Trump’s revocation of Washington Post’s press credentials is not going to stop the Post from covering his campaign.
The executive editor of Washington Post-Marty Baron replied Trump in a statement, saying, this “is nothing less than a repudiation of the role of a free and independent press.” He added that, the Post will “continue to cover Donald Trump as it has all along — honorably, honestly, accurately, energetically, and unflinchingly. We’re proud of our coverage, and we’re going to keep at it.”
Following the Post ban, several other media houses took to social media to congratulate the Post—sort of saying, being banned by Trump is an indication that you are doing something right.
In March, Mother Jones compiled a list of media houses which the Trump campaign team had blocked and the list mentioned outlets like the National Review, theDes Moines Register, Univision, BuzzFeed, the Daily Beast, the Huffington Post and Mother Jones.
