Barely 24 hours after a shock victory for the ‘Leave’ campaign in Britain’s EU referendum, some citizens are calling for a revote with the creation of an online petition.
One William Oliver Healey set up the petition calling for a revote, and the addition of some safeguards to ensure the results is more representative of the people – and his petition has garnered over 1m signatories in just over a day.
That has passed the 100,000 threshold mark needed for the House of Commons to debate on the subject of a petition.
“We the undersigned call upon HM Government to implement a rule that if the Remain or Leave vote is less than 60%, based on a turnout less than 75%, there should be another referendum.” Healey’s petition read.
Thursday’s referendum on whether to stay in or exit the European Union saw a 52%-48% victory for leave. Prime Minister David Cameron announced his impending resignation not soon after.
In the aftermath of the vote, prominent Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage has said one of their biggest promises was ‘a mistake’, and credit rating agency Moody has downgraded Britain’s credit rating from ‘stable’ to ‘negative’. The British Pound also continues to fall on the world market.
