Gambia's President Yahya Jammeh Bans Child Marriage & Threatens Jail Term for Imams Who Would Officiate Such Ceremonies

Gambian President Yahya Jammeh

Gambian’s president- Yahya Jammeh has reportedly banned child marriages in Gambia and has threatened to jail any Imam or person who will officiate such a marriage ceremony.
AFP news agency reports that Yahya Jammeh announced the ban on Wednesday, saying:
“Anyone who marries a girl under 18 years will spend 20 years in jail. The girls’ parents would spend 21 years in jail and anyone who knows about it and fails to report the matter to the authorities would spend 10 years in jail.”
This is a strong message from Yahya Jammeh and it’s capable of ending the many child marriages across his country—now that the men getting married to these children, those in charge of officiating and parents who allow this would face harsh punishments.
Jammeh has called for legislation to solidify the ban later this month.
