The former president Jerry John Rawlings says it saddens his heart to see the party that once hallmarked itself with discipline, accountability and transparency now swim in corruption—and the fact that he has no power to do anything about it makes it more excruciating.
Rawlings who was the first president of the 4th of the Republic on the ticket of the NDC said this in an interview with “The Guardian” , a Nigerian Newspaper when the subject of corruption came up.
“I would have wished that my moral authority could have the same influence. But that is not the case; corruption has infiltrated our institutions and their leaders so badly today that they use some kind of lens, to demonstrate that you can keep your moral authority, but this is executive power at work. The situation is so bad; so unfortunate.”
According to him that was part of the reasons why his wife left the party. Konadu now flagbearers the National Democratic Party (NDP).
The former president also endorsed the flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party. According to him Akufo Addo is not corrupt because he has no love for material possessions which is not same for the NDC. That he fears may affect them adversely in the November polls. “The NPP is lucky to have a leader who is not known for messing around with material things he added”.
