It’s once again being reported that Ghana’s talented rapper-Sarkodie is about to be sign to a big foreign record label—this time, to Jay Z’s Roc Nation.
A few years ago, we were told Sarkodie had been signed to Akon’s Konvict Africa and it turned out to be a lie; there were no career impact or any substantive evidence of the signing.
Later, Akon said; “Sarkodie was supposed to be the artiste that we actually brought out of Ghana, and we take him to the next level but unfortunately we couldn’t get the deal together so the deal never closed.”
Now, we are being told Sarkodie is about to be signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation as the label is in talk with the Ghanaian artiste to make this happen.
Live Fm says, Briant ‘Bee-High’ Biggs, Director of Mobile Strategies at Roc Nation has said;
“We are going country by country. I’m already talking to Sarkodie in Ghana to do something with him”—talking about signing him.
He added: “I got something in Gambia, Gabon and Senegal. We have it all spread out. Even in South Africa I am grabbing one artist out of there.”
Apparently, the African signing of artistes is to offer African acts proper structures to help them advance their brands.
“To give them proper distribution in the States and make sure that they are getting proper publishing dollars and royalties. So by using our platform that we already built, we are giving them access to everything we have at our office to help them do the same. Build their brands and their companies like we did ours,” he said.
 
It was widely reported recently that Nigerian musician-Tiwa Savage has already been signed to the label.
Considering the D’Banj and Kanye West’s Good Music signing deal, where arguably D’banj hasn’t benefited hugely as far as his career is concerned, the question remains; are such foreign signing of African artistes really the next big thing?
