A devastating wildfire sweeping through the south-western US state of California has led to a mass evacuation of homes from its path at it continues to rage.
Nicknamed the ‘Sand Fire’, the blaze ignited near the town of Santa Clarita, some 40 miles from LA, and has been raging non-stop since.
It has forced the evacuation of over 10,000 homes as authorities battle to stop it, with nearly 3,000 firefighters involved in the fight to stop the fire which has destroyed over a dozen homes.
California is embroiled in the midst of a drought that has been running for a few years, making the conditions very suitable for the fire.
“This is the fifth year of an ongoing drought, so we have very extreme fire behaviour,” Los Angeles County Fire Department Chief Daryl Osby said, as reported by the BBC.
“These are not normal times.”
The battle continues to stop the ‘Sand Fire’, as many more people are evacuated to be kept safe from it.
