The jailed ‘Montie 3’ who are serving four month sentences each for contempt, have signed the petition calling on the President of the Republic to exercise his constitutional prerogative and grant them pardons.
George Loh, one of the lawyers for the convicts who have been christened ‘Montie 3’- Salifu ‘Mugabe’ Maase, Alistair Nelson and Godwin Ako Gun – confirmed on Joy News that the three have affixed their signatures to the petition from their jails in Nsawam.
An entire movement, shepherded by powerful elements in the ruling NDC, have arisen calling for the three – who were jailed after threatening the lives of Supreme Court justices on radio – to be granted Presidential pardons.
Many prominent Ghanaians have signed so far, including education minister Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang and Gender Minister Nana Oye Lithur. The President has so far not laid out in public an official position on the petition.
Critics have called it an attempt to undermine the judiciary.
