Ghana will make appearance at the soon to start Rio Olympics–and one of the Ghana’s champions to watch out for is Szandra Szogedi, who will be representing Ghana in Judo.
Though Szandra Szogedi is a Hungarian by birth, she is now a Ghanaian by marriage and for some years now has been representing Ghana at major tournaments.
She has an interesting story—as someone who loved Judo at an early age but was forced to abandoned it when her parents divorced in 2007, as a result of financial hardship.
In her bid to make something out her life, she relocated to UK where she worked as a waitress at a hotel.
She told Associated Press in a recent interview that, at this stage, “I had the feeling that I had some unfinished business.”
Soon she started training again at a London Judo club, where she met her future husband, a Ghana-born engineer—after marriage, she acquired a Ghanaian citizenship and started flying high the flag of Ghana.
She narrowly missed out on qualifying for the 2012 London Olympics but has made it to the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Szogedi does not live in Ghana but she has been to Ghana once to meet her husband’s family–and says they were incredibly warm and hospitable.
Szogedi is ranked 40th in the world.
