Despite the most stringent defensive mechanisms employed by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Exams (WASSCE) has been plagued by several instances of malpractice, as usual.
With the release of the results for this year’s exams, the Council has revealed that the results of 85 schools have been withheld, en masse, due to suspicion of being involved in widespread cheating.
The council would investigate the allegations and decide whether to cancel or release the results based on their findings.
This was contained in a statement issued by WAEC’s Deputy Director of Public Affairs, Mrs Agnes Teye-Cudjoe, announcing the release of provincial results.
Individually, 568 candidates had their entire results cancelled, whilst 1,576 had results for at least one subject cancelled. The statement added that 2,293 students were caught to have cheated in either Maths, English or Science through the use of a new tracking software, and accordingly had their results cancelled. 13 others, in addition to having results cancelled, have been barred from taking any WAEC exams for the next two years.
The Council added that they were in the process of dispatching the results to the various schools across the country, and that students who wished to do so could check their results online.
