National Accreditation Board Confirms 'Fake' Doctorates Report – Also Asks Those With Honorary Degrees Not To Address Themselves As 'Dr'

The National Accreditation Board have come out strongly to corroborate reports that many unaccredited institutions worldwide confer honorary doctorates on prominent Ghanaian personalities.
A research paper published by two Ghanaian researchers at the Valdosta State University in the United States fingered many institutions, as well as prominent Ghanaian personalities, for having fallen prey to being awarded ‘fake doctorates’.
But several of those implicated, including lecturer John Gatsi and Gifty Anti, have since come out to deny the institutions involved were not accredited. Speaking to Graphic Online, the Executive Secretary of the NAB, Mr Kwame Dattey, commented on the current issues.
He acknowledged many unaccredited universities identify prominent Ghanaians to give them fake degrees. The ploys are mainly publicity stunts.
“They come here periodically, identify some prominent people in society and confer the honorary degrees on them. And we have come out several times in the newspapers and on our website to warn the public that these institutions are unaccredited in their home countries and people should not expose themselves to ridicule by first accepting such honorary degrees,” he said.
He said the onus was on such selected individuals to conduct their research and ensure they aren’t exposed to such public ridicule as they are now.
He also added that those receiving honorary doctorates have to cease using them in their titles, as it is not a earned title.
“You don’t have to address yourself as a doctor. If you are given an honorary degree, it is an honorary degree. Honorary is honorary — you don’t even have to put it on your curriculum vitae,” he said.
