Voting is a civic duty and a civil right–but unfortunately, Ghana’s Electoral Commission chairperson, Charlotte Osei says she wouldn’t be honouring her civic duty or exercise her civil right in the upcoming 2016 elections.
She says the former EC chairman-Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan had also refrained from casting his vote for the over two decades he was chairman of the commission–all because this helps to remain neutral.
Speaking in an interview on Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana, Osei said “I will not be voting on the election day like you because I don’t want to. It is not compulsory, it is a special privilege.”
She also asked Ghanaians to evaluate the issues at stake before voting, saying, “Who to vote for is entirely up to you but I would say that vote based on issues and where you want to see this country go and who you think can take this country there.”
