The chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei, says it is virtually impossible for her to single-handedly rig the elections for President Mahama as she has been accused of planning to do.
Mrs Osei, speaking to Paul Adom Otchere on Good Evening Ghana, said that such an undertaking would require the co-operation of a massive number of people involved at all levels of the electoral process, something she deems nigh impossible.
Charlotte was appointed by President Mahama following the retirement of longtime chair Afari Gyan, and her reign has so far been plagued with clashes after clashes with the opposition, who immensely distrusts her.
She, however, sought to calm nerves during her Thursday night interview.
“We have a high level of mistrust, and we tend to focus on persons, and so [people think] ‘Charlotte Osei has been appointed, and she’s coming to install a President’ But its just not possible under the system.” she said.
“For Charlotte Osei to do that, she has to get the support and active involvement of her six co-commissioners, her ten regional directors, the 200 plus district electoral officers, the 275 returning officers and their two assistants.” she continued.
She described the scenario down to the last polling assistant, adding that for her to rig the elections “I need to convince 500,000 plus people to skew the system in favour of one person. I haven’t figured out how to do that yet.”
