The boss of the Ghana Football Association, Kwesi Nyantakyi, says the application of the Presidential prerogative for mercy should be used jealously and sparingly, and not as frivolously as President John Dramani Mahama just employed in the case of the Montie 3.
The FA boss, speaking on Morning Starr Tuesday, said that the decision to free the three, for threatening the lives of judges, is not a good use of the constitutionally mandates power.
“I will say that, that prerogative of the President should be exercised jealously. It should be the last thing to do in circumstances such as this; it has happened and I don’t think it should happen again.” he told Nii Arday Clegg.
“It doesn’t really give very good signals and indications as to how we should practice free speech…A judgment may be incurably bad but it doesn’t mean you should insult a judge; I am sorry but this one, it’s not a good example,” he added.
The jailed Montie 3 – Alistair Nelson, Godwin Ako Gunn and Salifu ‘Mugabe’ Maase – are set to be released on Friday, after serving just a month out of their four month sentences; with the President remitting the rest based on the receipt of a petition calling for their release.
