The aide to Bishop Daniel Obinim who specialises in rapid responses to the Bishop’s many crises, Joseph Osei Oppong Brenya, has characterised the man who has accused the Bishop of fraud and led to his arrest as an idiot.
Obinim was picked up by police Tuesday, after he reported himself over assault charges for flogging two church members. But it then emerged he was also being held on fraud charges – after a businessman came forward to claim Obinim had defrauded him.
In a post on his Facebook page Wednesday, Brenya called into question the story given by the man, who claims to have been defrauded of gold to the tune of Ghc 11.6m by the Prophet.
Brenya says the man’s story makes no sense, asking questions about whether he reported the initial fraud to police. According to Brenya, “It’s better to let someone think you are an Idiot than to open your mouth and prove it.”
That I can agree with him on. On the facts of the case as released by the police to the media, the man is indeed an idiot. As I wrote on reporting on it yesterday…
The man, who seems quite loose with his money due to his extreme gullibility, said he went to see a fetish priest known as Okomfo Gyakpata and handed him Ghc 780,000 to be blessed, but after a while he realised the Mallam was not willing to give him back his money.
So after foolishly getting himself defrauded, in November last year, he went to see Obinim in June for help to retrieve the money from the Okomfo. Obinim asked him to bring the rest of the money, in the form of his family’s gold fortune, and he also willingly brought it and handed it over to the Bishop; gold valued at the Ghc 11.6m figure.
But if Obinim also took the money from him, which Brenya never denied, and has failed to retrieve the earlier or returned the latter to him, then he also has a case to answer for.
