Journalist And Development Worker Joseph Amoo Bemoans Shameless Sensationalism Of Ghanaian Media Exposed By Recent Obinim Controversy

A journalist and dedicated development worker, Joseph Quaye Amoo, has bemoaned the lack of coverage handed to real issues plaguing the country by the media, instead focusing on shallow, sensational stories such as that of Obinim which has no developmental value.
Amoo, who works in development journalism and is thus intent on seeing the media turn their focus to the real issues, said in a recent video that instead of fuelling development, the profit motive is at the forefront of reportage – which means giving more coverage to the stories that sell, no matter how silly.
Even the major dailies in the nation are prey to this mindset, with the Obinim saga receiving almost universal coverage locally.
“…I have seen that the leading newspapers in the country have consistently given him (Obinim) big headlines on their front pages, and I find that very problematic for our development. There are a thousand and one developmental issues we can focus on in this country, rather than the trash we keep feeding the public with” Amoo said in the video, posted to his Facebook page.
Amoo, an alumni of the Ghana Institute of Journalism, added that the shift towards a more educated and informed public concerned with our development can start if the entire media landscape commits to making that shift. Unfortunately, that’s not the case.
“We need a media that just refuses to sell sensational stuff for the sake of commercial interest…the media should be seen as a development partner.”
These comments, especially for the state owned media, should hold true – but unfortunately they lead the charge with sensationalism sometimes.
“If the media sees itself as the institution that holds government accountable, why is the media failing to hold itself accountable?” he wondered.
