France’s highest administrative court has today ruled that, the on-going strict enforcement of “burkini bans” on the country’s beaches are seriously illegal and a violation of fundamental human rights.
The State Council (Conseil d’Etat) made the ruling while examining laws which were brought in by commune of Villeneune-Loubet.
The court stated that, it has not found any evidence which favours prohibition–that there’s no evidence a risk to public order exists because of  “the outfits worn by some people to go swimming”.
Three senior judges said the ban “has dealt a serious and clearly illegal blow to fundamental liberties such as the freedom of movement, freedom of conscience and personal liberty.”
The ruling comes after at least 30 cities, resorts and communes implemented bans on modest swimwear this summer–with Cannes having been the first city to enforce the prohibition.
“The bans have since spread, sparking fierce debate about France’s secular values, women’s rights and religious freedom,” UK’s Independent reports.
