A new appeal by the prosecution in the Oscar Pistorius murder case to get an increase to the six years handed to him by the judge has been rejected, meaning the athlete would serve the six years initially handed him.
Trial judge Thokozile Masipa rejected the appeal, siding with the defence who argued that the legal process had been thoroughly exhausted in getting to the initial judgement and that the appeal had nothing to add.
The former Paralympic World Champion and first disabled Olympian was put on trial for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013. Pistorius shot and killed her through a locked bathroom door, arguing he thought there was an intruder in the house.
He was initially tried on manslaughter and sentenced to five years, but even after the prosecution managed to get the charge amended to murder on appeal, Judge Thokozile Masipa handed Pistorius just an additional year on the sentence, something the prosecution described as too lenient.
