James Appiah, Owner Of Atlantis Radio Dead

The owner of one of the first private radio stations in Ghana, James Appiah ,popularly known as Big J has passed on.
Broadcaster Abu Issa Monie who also works at the Royal Bank, eulogised him in a post on Facebook Monday morning.
He wrote
“I remember those early days at GBC, when the late Dusty Wayne used to host a specially selected Music Show selected by James Appiah who was to become the founder and owner of Atlantis Radio. Today’s great idea actually started in a very small way as they say indeed.
I remember one day, when Dusty did not turn up, and James quickly asked me to step in and present the show. Our friendship blossomed after that, and since then we have been very good friends and we discuss everything concerning the media and his pioneering role in establishing private radio in Ghana.
But my discussion with James Appiah will not end until we discuss International Politics, and I consider that to be his favourite past time.
I have mentioned him as one of the pioneers of private radio in Ghana, because of what I personally know about him in those early 90’s when i was a DJ or presenter on Radio 2 and GBC FM which later became Unique FM.
James I will miss you more, because I always have it in mind to present to you a copy of my book with your name printed in it, as someone who was there long before others joined. James damirifa due, James nanti yie. My sincere condolences to the entire family.”
One of the very first private radio stations to be established in Ghana, James, affectionately called Big J, built Atlantis Radio into a successful story.
Heavy on essential adult listening, Atlantis has maintained a unique style over the years, endearing it to a large following.
