Legendary American singer/songwriter Bob Dylan has been awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature, honoured for “having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition,”
Dylan’s award was announced by the Academy Thursday, making history as the first songwriter to win the award and also becoming the first American to do so since 1993.
Sara Danius, President of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which hands out the awards, said that Dylan is “a great poet in the English speaking tradition”.
“For 54 years now he’s been at it reinventing himself, constantly creating a new identity,” she told the press in the Swedish capital of Stockholm.
The 75 year old Dylan, born Robert Allen Zimmerman, has only authored three books in his life – and was awarded more for his magnificent lyrics which are often labelled as poetry.
The last American to win the award was novellist Toni Morrison in 1993.
