21 of the (in)famous Chibok girls – the group of over 200 girls captured by the militant terrorist group Boko Haram in Nigeria – were freed last week following a negotiated deal between the Nigerian government and the group.
The freed girls were reunited with their families in an emotional ceremony held in Abuja, and some of them also spoke to the press narrating the horrors they went through in their two year stay with the group.
One girl narrated how at points, they were mistreated and barely fed by the fighters of the group.
“We had no food for one month and 10 days but we did not die. We thank God,”one girl said, speaking in Hausa.
“We never imagined that we would see this day but, with the help of God, we were able to come out of enslavement.” another girl added, as reported by the BBC.
Over 200 girls were captured by Boko Haram in April of 2014, sparking the worldwide #BringBackOurGirls campaign.
Some have been freed, some have died and some have escaped captivity, leaving around 197 still missing, according to the British broadcaster. The girls, most of whom were Christians, say they have all been forcibly converted to Islam – and some are even reluctant to be freed having gotten used to their new lives with their spouses in the group.
The Nigerian government says negotiations are ongoing to free all the girls.
