The amazing antics of Bishop Daniel Obinim and his followers willingness to excuse everything and just follow him anywhere had left me convinced that he had the dumbest group of followers in the country – but that was before I met the followers of Rev Isaac Owusu Bempah the doomsday prophet.
The Kumasi based prophet recently made a ‘prophecy’ concerning the NPP flagbearer Nana Akuffo-Addo, claiming that unknown elements were planning to assassinate him when he goes to the Volta Region to campaign (he’s currently there).
Bempah was invited by the Police Wednesday to share any possible information he had with them, which was when his brain dead followers decided to mass up at the Police Headquarters and cause a day long ruckus.
This behaviour carried out by grown men and women of blindly showing loyalty is disturbing, and points more towards a cult of personality with these preachers rather than any concern with what’s actually moral. When Obinim was arrested, none of his followers expressed any doubt that he had done no wrong, even without being privy to any facts concerning the case. Their position was that Angel was right no matter what.
But for all the clueslessness exhibited by Obinim’s followers during his case, at least he was ARRESTED by police. Owusu Bempah had been INVITED by the police for an amicable chat, and yet that did not stop his followers massing up at the CID Headquarters in Accra and calling for his release.

A bunch of them who spoke to Joy News where screaming at the top of their lungs for Owusu Bempah to be let go. They said the police was following the wrong person, who had just warned them of what he saw.
One even said the Police should have politely gone to Owusu Bempah and asked him to give them more info rather than arresting him.
The problem here, if you might not have noticed, was that Owusu Bempah was never arrested. He had been invited in for questioning, and was going to be let go after unless something unexpected happened, yet these people did not see it that way.
One even claimed, after the Bishop wes let go, that it was the result of her answered prayer.
Really?
These are all adult citizens who presumably work for a living in different sectors of the economy. Yet the level of logical reasoning on display here makes it difficult to see how exactly they are aiding to push the country forward.
We really have to wean ourselves off these blind display of loyalty to celebrity, and most importantly, skipping productive work days to stand in the sun and scream for useless causes like this one. Owusu Bempah would have been released yesterday if a single supporter had not stepped foot at police headquarters.
