Fidel Castro Dies Aged 90

Former Cuban President Fidel Castro has passed away at the age of 90.
Castro died late Friday, President Raul announced on state television.
“The commander in chief of the Cuban revolution died at 22:29 hours this evening,” he said.
A revolutionary firebrand who led the Communist revolution in his country, Fidel governed Cuba either as President or Prime Minister for 49 years, eventually handing over power to his brother Raul in 2008 due to health problems.
Castro came into power in 1959, overthrowing the government of Fulgencio Batista. He implemented state run socialism and anti imperialist policies, and remained a staunch enemy of the United States due to his coziness with the then Soviet Union. This led to an economic blockade which was only lifted in recent times under President Obama.
An accomplished military tactician, Castro was a divisive figure who was as loved by his supporters as he was despised by his detractors.
There will be several days of national mourning to mark the passing of the late leader.
