A large scale clinical trial have commenced in South Africa for an AIDS vaccine which is being labelled the first major attempt since 2009.
The study would involve 5,400 selected s*xually active young people, and is expected to run for just about ten years.
Code-named HVTN 702, the study is being led by Glenda Gray, a university research professor and head of South Africa’s Medical Research Council. The study seeks to expand on the moderate success of the last large scale study, in 2009 in Thailand.
“It will tell us whether the initial success observed [at a smaller scale] will bear fruit in the form of a safe and effective HIV vaccine designed for the people of southern Africa,” Dr Gray said.
Despite this study and the search for a vaccine for the deadly illness, a Ghanaian claims to have found the cure to the disease through herbal research.
