President John Dramani Mahama is retiring from local partisan politics and would most likely not contest for President in 2020 – his brother and close confidante, Ibrahim Mahama has revealed.

According to Ibrahim, President Mahama’s family are advising him not to contest the next elections and that he is predisposed to accept that advice.

“John has given his all in politics to the NDC and Ghana and we think it is just fair that we allow him to rest.” Ibrahim told a group of reporters ahead of Nana Akufo-Addo’s inauguration last week.

“We were very supportive and instrumental in convincing him to partner the late Prof. J.E.A. Mills, and when the time came for him to contest for President, we supported him and advised him to go for it…Now we have advised him not to make a comeback in 2020,” he added.

Ibrahim Mahama’s comments run counter to what numerous NDC bigwigs, such as Kofi Adams and Nii Lante Vanderpuye, have said, who expect the President to save their party in 2020. But Ibrahim added they have to respect the family’s decision.

“It is important for those calling for his comeback to also respect the family’s judgement”. Ibrahim added.

The President himself have spoken little on his future, although a very close associate, Dele Momodu, have revealed that he plans to enter into farming, which might indicate retirement is in his plans.
