Simon Cowell’s Syco Record Label dropped the pair of Ghanaian stars Reggie and Bollie and not the other way round.
The pair revealed on social media Wednesday that they were breaking away from the label, noting that it feels “f*cking right” to be finally independent.
That created an impression of them breaking away of their own volition, but reports indicate it might be the other way round.
A source told UK’s The Sun that the label dropped the two because they couldn’t turn their huge support into record sales.
“Reggie N Bollie were huge hits on the show which is why they reached the final and very nearly won.” he said.
“But after they left the show, excitement for them dwindled and they struggled to turn their support into record sales.”
The source added, though, that the pair also wanted to “focus on a different style.”
“Reggie ’N’ Bollie are no longer working with us. We wish the guys the best of luck for the future.” a spokesperson for Syco told the tabloid.
Reggie and Bollie released two singles, ‘New Girl’, which was a moderate chart success, and ‘Link Up’, which fell flat on its face.
