The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Otiko Afisa Djaba, has said she’s taking the issue of assault against a Ghanaian Marwako employee ‘seriously’ and outlined measures to take action on the incident.

Evelyn Boakye, who worked at the restaurant, allegedly had her face dipped in pepper by a supervisor, Lebanese citizen Jihad Chaabn, who happens to be brother in law to the restaurant’s owner.

Boakye has reported the incident to police, who have charged Chaabn with assault – but the Minister visited the Abelenkpe premises of Marwako today (Tuesday) to speak on the issue.

In the company of Labour Minister Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, the outspoken Djaba said nobody deserved to be maltreated this way in a 60 year old Ghana and promised to take up the issue.

“After 60 years of independence, nobody’s rights should be infringed upon and as the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, that message is at the core of our vision and what we have to do for Ghanaians and so I’m taking this matter seriously.” she said.

“I will meet the management of Marwako, I’ll meet the victim and then we will have discussion with the Ministry of Employment and TUC and other organisations that are owned by foreigners and even Ghanaian employers.

“We must respect each other; I think that is at the bottom of what is going on. It is the lack of respect, we need to respect our employees because we cannot do what they do.” she concluded.
