Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Kofi Adda, has revealed that the government plans to build about one million toilet facilities for households in the country to tackle the issue of open defecation.

Adda told Citi Fm in Accra that the government is looking at completing the project to help tackle the menace, which is present in much of the country.

It’s an open secret that open defecation is rampant all across the country, and it contributes significantly to the outbreaks of cholera and other similar diseases which occurs almost annually.

The minister told the station government are determined to nip the issue in the bud by embarking on the massive project.

“We are putting together a comprehensive programme to address this factor (open defecation). We are trying to get a toilet in every house. If you have a toilet in every house, along the beach areas, open defecation in all the beaches will not be needed anymore. On the national scale, we are targeting 1 million toilet facilities.”

He said the issue has popped up because the bye-laws in existence (on every house having a toilet) have not been adhered to.
