Ghanaian forward Elvis Manu has been let go by Eredivisie side Go Ahead Eagles after he expressed his support for another Dutch club at a time his team was embroiled in a bitter relegation battle.

Manu, a Brighton player on loan at the Eagles, took to social media Sunday to express his love for Feyenoord, at a time when his team had an upcoming clash against Ajax Amsterdam.

Go Ahead Eagles lost the game by 4-0, confirming their relegation to the second tier. And club bosses, after being made aware of Manu’s actions, took stringent action against him.

The club issued a statement Monday to announce Manu’s termination.

“Go Ahead Eagles say goodbye to Elvis Manu as from today.

“He stood accused of unprofessional conduct around the time of our match against Ajax.

“His two posts on social media that day led us to believe he was not fully focused on our crucial game.

“Club management saw the posts after the game, and Manu was told this morning [Monday] that his services are no longer required.

“We will now set our sights fully on Sunday’s match against Sparta Rotterdam, when we hope to end the season in worthy fashion.”

Feyenoord is Manu’s childhood club, as he grew up as a youth team player there, spending ten years before moving to Brighton.
