Former President John Dramani Mahama has hit at US President Donald Trump over his impending decision to withdraw the US from the landmark Paris Climate Agreement.

Taking to twitter, Mahama said the decision would be pandering to a ‘narrow political base’ and would erode ‘US leadership around the world’.

The 2015 accord, signed by every nation on earth except two, was a pledge by all nations to tackle climate change and reduce emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Then President Barack Obama signed the US onto the accord but current President Trump, who has said in the past that climate change is a ‘Chinese hoax’, has made clear his intentions to withdraw from the pact.

But Mahama, who was President of Ghana when the deal was struck, is unhappy with Trump’s decision and made it clear on twitter.

“We all worked hard to reach the 2015 Paris Climate Change Agreement. US contributes 20% of CO2 pollution in the atmosphere. ” he wrote.

“From Ghana, Former President JA Kufuor was one of the eminent coordinators at the COP21. ” he added.

He concluded: “Sacrificing global interest to pander to a narrow domestic political base is eroding US leadership of the world.

Syria and Nicaragua are the only countries not signed onto the deal.
