Ghanaian football fans are still wondering what the hell Asamoah Gyan and the GFA been up to–following Ghana’s 5-0 win over the Ethiopian national team.

It’s not the ease with which Ghana managed to beat Ethiopia that has taken over social media but the fact that Asamoah Gyan came into the match wearing a customised captain armband–never seen in football anywhere in the world.

Ghanaian social media users do not seem to understand why the GFA would allow this when in clear terms FIFA has specific requirements for captain armbands which the Asamoah Gyan’s customising flaunts.

People have said the customising was to mark his 50th goal for the national team, an achievement he only current holds–but even that, the critics say, if Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo do not wear customised captain armbands despite their football greatness, then spoiled brat Asamoah Gyan shouldn’t be given any special privilege. Especially when the privilege seems to contradict FIFA requirements.

Ghanaian Sports Journalist-Gary Al-Smith wrote on his Facebook: “I’m informed that Puma customised it for him to mark his first game in Ghana after getting his 100th cap (today was his 102nd). It was also done in anticipation of his 50th goal (which he scored).”

Interestingly, because Gyan wore his unique armband which featured his face on it, when he was substituted, Dede Ayew could not take the band from him as a captain and he had to be given a different one–once again, contrary to football convention.
