Substandard Content, Not Telenovelas, Cause Of Local Movie Industry Collapse – 'Inspector Bediako'

Actor Oscar Provencal, known as ‘Inspector Bediako’ for his portrayal of the iconic character from the 90’s series, has identified the lack of quality content as the reason the local movie industry is in decline.
According to the veteran screen star, it’s wrong to blame the rise in foreign telenovelas as the reason for the collapse of our local industry as so many are intent on doing.
Provencal was reacting to news about a planned demonstration by filmakers in Kumasi against local tv stations broadcasting foreign soaps, most of which have been translated into twi, making them hugely popular.
But the actor says tv stations are chasing revenue and would thus only broadcast what brings them revenue. Therefore, if local filmakers do not produce quality content the foreign soaps would always be broadcast.
“I think that, it’s an unfortunate situation. There is nothing wrong with demonstrating but Telenovelas are not the problem. It is only now that the local industries are letting the Telenovelas stand out. TV stations want content that bring revenue, if that is not happening, they will look for new avenues…” he said.
