Sad news coming from South Africa this morning as Hugh Masekela has left the land of the living.
The legendary South African jazz trumpeter passed away peacefully this morning, Tuesday January 23rd, his family announced via a statement.
Masekela died in Johannessburg after “a protracted and courageous battle with prostate cancer”, his family’s statement said.
“A loving father, brother, grandfather and friend, our hearts beat with a profound loss. Hugh’s global and activist contribution to and participation in the areas of music, theatre and the arts in general is contained in the minds and memories of millions across six continents,” the statement added.

Aged 78, Masekela is survived by two children.
