The thing about the VGMAs is, it never fails to stir up controversy. Long after the event, it is still the topic for discussion on most media platforms and social media. Every one is receiving their fair share of the backlash, from Patapaa for going home with nothing but the empty pockets of his oversized zoomlion suit to King Promise’s articulator “camboo”.
As we all know, the hosts of the event were TV Presenter Berla Mundi and actor John Dumelo. Some think they did a fairly good job running the show, while others feel like they could have done a better job. For Mark Okraku Mantey, Berla Mundi shouldn’t have even stepped on the red carpet not to talk of being the main host of the show. He also thinks John Dumelo was one hell of a boring co-host and his jokes were as dry as the skin on Patapaa’s elbows.
Mark Okraku Mantey is the President of the Creative Arts Council and believes his opinion on entertainment matters should be considered as the “gospel”, though a lot of people often disagree with his somewhat controversial opinions. Speaking with Naa Ashorkor on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z on Saturday in an assessment of the 2018 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, Mr. Mantey expressed his disappointment in organizers of the event, Charterhouse for their choice of hosts which he believes was on the mediocre side.
He was totally unimpressed with John Dumelo’s performance and V8 jokes, describing it as abysmal and woeful. “He was lost. If this is our standard for emceeing and we think it is good enough then we are prehistoric…Producing dry jokes, now dancing, some funny moves, not tickling anyone,” Mark Okraku-Mantey bashed. He said that compared to former hosts of the event like KKD, Chris Attoh, Bola Ray, Kwame Sefa Kayi and the rest, Berla Mundi was simply not VGMA main host material and she should have rather been the supporting MC to a more matured main host.
However, PRO for Charterhouse George Quaye defended their choice of MCs, stating that Berla Mundi has proven herself more than capable of being the main host of the VGMAs considering her previous performances as host for Miss Malaika and also hosting the Red Carpet for previous VGMAs. He also commended John Dumelo for his performance and explained that he wasn’t there because of his reputation for being a great MC but that he paired nicely with the main hostess Berla Mundi.
Berla, in response to Mark Okraku Mantey’s jabs at her posted on twitter, ““It doesn’t matter how young you may be, you can and will be a leader. No man can dispose what God has proposed! Always B.YOU”.
