Reigning WBO super Bantamweight Champion Isaac ‘The Royal Storm’ Dogboe, has once again proven how different he is from the typical Ghanaian boxer by revealing he is going back to school to continue his education.
Dogboe, a high school graduate who put off school to concentrate on his career, says now that he is a champion he has more control over his schedule and thus believes this is the best time to go back to school.
Honestly, how many Ghanaian athletes would make such a move? When they are on top of the world and have started making real money. Most boxers in Ghana don’t even have much education to begin with.
Dogboe, however, is cut from a different cloth and said he plans to earn his first degree in sociology.
“I have completed high school and I will be going to University this September. When you start boxing in the beginning that is the difficult part because they can call you anytime to have a fight. And that is why we train all year round so that whenever the call you, you will be ready. But now I am a world champion and we call the shots, now we know when we are going to have a fight and thus how we are going to structure my training and my school.” he told GhanaWeb.
“So it was worth it to take a few years out because when we started this people were skeptical and were like, what if you don’t become a world champion or what if it takes longer for you to become a champion? Does that mean you will wait until you become a world champion before you start going to school? But that is all part of the sacrifice,” he added.
23 year old Dogboe beat defending champion Jesse Magdaleno last month in Philadelphia to pick up the WBO title. In the process he became the 9th Ghanaian to win a world title and the youngest ever.
