The clash of the titans between Belgium and France proved to be everything it had been billed up to be as the first semi final of the 2018 World Cup took place in St Petersburg.
1998 World Champions France beat tournament dark horses Belgium 1-0 to make their third final in six tournaments.
Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti headed in a corner in the 51st minute to give his team the ultimate victory.
Evidently the more glamorous semi final game, the two most talented squads in the tournament met with world class players concentrated within both teams.
Eden Hazard and Lukaku led the line for Belgium whilst on the other side, Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe caused Belgium’s three man back line numerous problems.
Despite the concentration of talent the game was a cagey one, taking a while before the first true opportunity was created.
Toby Alderwiereld had his snapshot on the turn palmed away by Lloris, whilst Cortouis also saved from Pavard for France, sticking out his leg to stop the ball.
The game opened up in the second half after Umtiti’s goal which came off a set piece, the defender jumping ahead of Fellaini to nod the ball home.
Belgium threw everything forward in the final half hour looking for the equalizer but to no avail as France once again make another world cup final to attempt to win their second mundial.
