Ghana is flushed with mediocrity in almost every sector you can think of, especially in governance and administration but also in showbiz — we have a lot of so-called stars who would be jokes if they existed in any other country’s showbiz industry.
No other place is this illustrated more than in the Ghanaian comedy scene. At least when it comes to acting and music we can compete a little with Nigerians even if they still kick our a$$ – but when it comes to comedy it’s not even a contest at all.
The best comedians we can ‘boast’ of are self-acclaimed king DKB, Foster Romanus and others – and you cannot say any of them are in the same league as Basketmouth, AY or even Klint da Drunk.
KSM is a legend in his own right but he’s retiring and we need others to take over but no one is stepping up to the plate.
Perhaps in an attempt to motivate the next generation, KSM has said in an interview that he believes Ghanaian comedians are not inferior to those from Nigeria.
According to him, if there is a comedy ‘Ghana Meets Naija’ our comedians would do so well.
KSM said he “does not find [Nigerians] funnier than Ghanaian comedians. I don’t”.
“If I put up DKB, Lekzy, I am sorry if I haven’t mentioned some of the other names, but I know about Foster, too. If we put them together and really have them prepare for a ‘Ghana Meets Naija’, they will do so well”.
He said Ghanaians are too hard on our comedians and that discourages them. He therefore called for us to give them our support instead.
