The police officer who brutally assaulted a woman at Midland Savings and Loans, Lance Corporal Frederick Amanor Skalla, is a free man today after the court hearing the assault case against him threw out the case.
As is typical of our dear nation Ghana, the case has turned into a ‘foolish case’ — and the judge was left with no choice but to discharge the accused without any punitive action.
The case was thrown out of court because the complainant, Ms Patience Osafo, was not interested in the case. She reportedly did not make herself available to investigators or to appear in court and testify against her abuser.
With the complainant not interested in the case, prosecutors could not make their case against Amanor and the trial judge discharged him as well as three other officials of Midland.
Amanor was put on trial after a video went viral showing him brutally assaulting Madam Patience, who had camped at the Midland office asking for money owed her to be paid. The officer lost his cool after she refused to leave, assaulting her even though she had a baby in hand.
The reason she was not interested in pursuing the case could be tied to the fact that she received a hefty compensation package from the company after they were criticized over the attack on her.
So today Amanor is a free man, despite brutally assaulting a woman holding a baby live on camera for the whole Ghana to see.
