The deadliest mass shooting in New Zealand’s history occurred today as terrorists hit two mosques in an apparent racist attack.
The assailants attacked two mosques in Christchurch, NZ, whilst worshippers were in for Friday service, killing as many as 49 people and seriously wounding 20 others.
According to witnesses at one mosque, they saw a person dressed in black entering the mosque and then heard shots being fired.
After firing on the worshippers, the assailant came out, dropped his semi-automatic weapon and fled.
“I saw dead people everywhere. There were three in the hallway, at the door leading into the mosque, and people inside the mosque,” Len Peneha, who lives next door to one of the mosques, said.
“It’s unbelievable nutty. I don’t understand how anyone could do this to these people, to anyone. It’s ridiculous.”
Police have arrested three men and one woman in connection with the attack. The man believed to be the main assailant, a 28-year-old white male, has been charged with murder.
The attack was motivated by anti-immigrant sentiments, a manifesto allegedly released by the attackers said. They said the country was being overrun by Muslim immigrants and refugees and needed to take action.
The shootings are the worst in New Zealand’s history.
