A U.S based professor Chikaodinaka Nwankpa has found himself in hot waters after spending almost $200,000 of research grants chilling at strip clubs.
Dr Nwankpa, 56 years of age, was caught using the academic money for his personal expenses, triggering an investigation.
Nwankpa was head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Drexel University in Philadelphia and misappropriated the funds over a 10 year period between 2007 and 2017.
He is alleged to have spent large chunks of his federal research grants at strip clubs, sports bars and even on iTunes charges.
Some of the strip clubs he visited included Club Risque, Cheerleaders, and the Tacony Club.
“This is an example of flagrant and audacious fraud and a shameful misuse of public funds,” said US Attorney William McSwain.
“The agencies providing these grant funds expect them to be used towards advancements in energy and naval technology for public benefit, not for personal entertainment.”
Drexel University, which discovered the fraud and alerted the authorities, have agreed to pay back the misused funds, totalling $189,000, to avoid a potential civil lawsuit.
