Can You Do It? American Man To Take His Nigerian Wife’s Surname After Marriage Instead of the Other Way Round

A U.S man has caused a bit of a shock on social media after announcing that he’s going to take his wife’s surname after they get married, instead of her taking his as is the norm.

The guy, a black American engineer, revealed the shocking news on social media.

“I recently got married! I’m replacing my birth surname/suffix (Sueing III) with Ekundayo (the wife’s name) so that we can pass it on to our future children,” he tweeted.

He justified his decision by revealing his wife’s name has a nice Yoruba meaning.

“Ekundayo” means ‘to turn tears to joy’ in Yoruba,” he added.

Guys taking their wives’ name happens occasionally in the West, but in Africa it’s virtually unheard of.
