Lagos To Ban ‘Okadas’ Due to their ‘Chaos and Disorderliness’ Leading To Too Many Accidents

The Lagos State government has announced plans to ban motorbikes, popularly known as ‘Okadas’, from the streets starting February 1st.

According to plans outlined by the state, the motorbikes contribute immensely to overcrowding in the City, which is Nigeria’s business capital.

They are lead to ‘chaos and disorderliness’ which contributes to the high rate of road accidents in the city.

The ban would also include the three-wheeled transport vehicles locally dubbed ‘keke’.

According to Reuters, the ban would “bar them (motorcycles) from 40 bridges and flyovers and areas covering the business districts of Victoria Island and Lagos Island, Apapa, where the primary port is located and Ikeja, which is home to the international airport.”

The ban was announced on Twitter and takes effect February 1st.

Nigeria has some ridesharing, Uberstyle motorcycle companies which are expected to bear the worst brunt of the ban.
