A Nigerian woman from Kano has been arrested for being married to two men at the same time.
Hauwa Ali, a 37-year-old woman from Kumbotso Local Government Area, was accused by her first husband of bigamy – marrying a 2nd husband whilst they are still married.
The complaint led to her arrest from her residence by the Kano State Hisbah Board.
The case is under investigation and she will be arraigned before court upon its completion.
Hauwa, however, denies the charge, insisting that her first husband divorced her before she remarried again.
The Kano State Hisbah Board, which arrested the woman, is a body which oversees the enforcement of Sharia (Islamic) law in Nigeria’s Kano State.
The troubling thing is if it was a man who married two women – there would be no case.

In fact under Sharia, a man can marry up to four women. How is that a fair and equitable system?
