Is Ghanaian Music Receding Even With the Likes of Shatta, Sarkodie and Stoenbwoy At the Helm?

Once upon a time, the music that was coming from Ghana was on fire. Tic Tac, Obrafour, Obour, VIP, R2Bees and Ruff and Smooth were all releasing hits upon hits. The music scene was jamming, and everyone could recognise the contributions of Ghanaian artists in the Afrobeat’s genre.

A song featuring Ghanaian artists and Nigerian artists were always guaranteed to be a huge success from Tic Tac featuring Tony Tetuila all the way to Wande Coal featuring R2Bees. The Afrobeats scene had Ghanaians contributing their quota and Nigerians were singing along to music from Ghana.

Ruff and Smooth’s hit song “Naija Baby” was played at every Nigerian party and the introduction of Azonto just took Ghanaian music and Afrobeat as a whole to a whole different dimension especially outside the shores of Africa.

Today, the least said about music originating from Ghana the better. Although Ghana has some decent musicians in Shatta Wale, Stonebwoy and Sarkodie, their influence in very limited when compared to the top artists in Nigeria. Truth be told, they are local champions.

Kofi Kinaata is one artist who has huge tracks in Ghana is a top musician but clearly a local champion. His music is on par with the best in the country if not higher. He has been very consistent on the music scene releasing hits upon hits. Not a year goes by without one of his song’s becoming an anthem in Ghana but outside Ghana nobody knows him.

Kwame Eugene, Kidi and King Promise have all had songs that have penetrated the Afrobeat scene but many people who are not Ghanaians only know the songs not the artists.

While Davido, Wizkid and Burna Boy continue to release hit upon hits, Ghana must rely on Patapaa’s gimmick song, “one corner” to be semi relevant.

It is a shame that the current crop of afrobeat artists in the country keep producing mediocre music.

Hopefully Kwesi Arthur, Article Wan, Fameye, Wendy Shay, King Promise and the rest can raise their game and restore the glory days in Ghana music.
