Lockdown Updates – Akufo-Addo Extends Lockdown One More Week – Announces Gov’t Will Pay 50% of Electricity Bills for Ghanaians

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced in his latest Coronavirus Presidential address that the partial lockdown on parts of the country to deal with the coronavirus pandemic is being extended by one more week.

The initial lockdown was expected to end on Monday, April 13th, but the one-week extension pushes it to Monday, April 20th.

“The decision has been taken through the issuance of another executive instrument to extend the restriction of movements in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area and Kasoa and the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area and its contiguous districts by one more week beginning 1am on Monday the 13th of April, subject to review,” the President said.

In another measure to alleviate the suffering of Ghanaians, the President said low-income households will not have to pay for electricity for the next three months whilst everyone else will receive a 50% cut in their bills.

“We have decided further measure of mitigation for Ghanaians for the next three months… Government will fully absorb electricity bills for the poorest of the poor, i.e: lifeline consumers. This will cover persons who consume 0 to 50-kilowatt hours per month for this period. This forms part of relief interventions by the state amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.

“Other categories of consumers will enjoy a 50 percent discount within the same period. For all other consumers, residential and commercial, the government will absorb 50 percent of your electricity bill for this period using your March 2020 bill as the benchmark,” he noted.
