CSM Cases In Ghana Hit 409 With 40 Deaths

As Ghana continues to rally its forces towards fighting the deadly coronavirus and the economic challenges that accompany it, another deadly disease continues to wreak havoc in the Northern and Upper Regions of Ghana.

CSM, known in full as Cerebro-spinal meningitis is an annual disaster that confronts persons in the Country’s Northern and Upper Regions. Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) is a very serious infection that can sometimes lead to fatal consequences. CSM is an acute inflammation of the membranes covering the brain and the spinal cord (meninges). This condition is classified as a medical emergency. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 10 -15 % of patients diagnosed with CSM die.

The Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyeman Manu says the government is working with experts to deal with the outbreak of cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) in the five regions of the north. He said public education has been intensified in the affected areas while stakeholders are being engaged to help curb the disease.

But even as the government intensifies education in the affected areas, the disease continues to wreak havoc. A total of 409 cases has been recorded so far with 40 deaths.

The Ghana Health Service says that even though there is no vaccine for this strain causing the outbreak, there is an effective treatment upon early reporting and initiation of the said treatment.
