The Centre for Plant Medicine Research at Mampong Akwapim in the Eastern Region is in the process of testing the effectiveness of Neem leaves and some other herbs in treating COVID-19.

The Director of the Centre, Dr Kofi Bobi Barimah who spoke with Radio Ghana said though Neem leaves have since time immemorial addressed many health issues, the Centre cannot confirm at this moment that neem leaves help in treating symptoms of COVID-19. He, however, stated that the research is still ongoing.

Since the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus, many people have proposed the adoption of orthodox herbal medicine as an efficient means of treating the disease. Though the efficacy of neem tree as a possible treatment for COVID-19 has not yet been established, the speculations abound that it could be effective against the disease, considering its efficacy against many other diseases.

Ghana has recorded 1,550 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 155 recoveries and 11 deaths. The country currently has 1,384 active cases of the dreaded disease.
