There is one reason politics is such a dirty game and why it is behind 90% of the problems facing Ghana – it is pure pay for play.

Politics is the physical embodiment of the saying ‘you scratch my back, I scratch your back’ – a politician does not do someone a favour for free or vice versa.

Since announcing a run for office, John Dumelo has been spending money like there’s no tomorrow.

He has held numerous donation exercises in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency as he battles to purchase the hearts and minds of his constituents. That’s aside the Ghc 200,000 in interest-free loans he recently promised businesses in the constituency – only God knows how much John has spent on these exercises so far.

He has taken it up a notch after announcing on social media this afternoon that he is going to equip students of GIMPA with 2 terabytes of free data to enable them take part in online lectures.

Now there’s nothing wrong with a politician helping out their constituents but the problem with Dumelo’s uncensored spending is that without transparency regarding where he’s receiving his funding, we have no idea who is helping him finance his campaign.

Who is waiting in the wings for Dumelo to enter office so he can scratch that person’s back in return? We have no idea and that should be very worrying for every Ghanaian.
