A senior lecturer and Head of Department of the Banking and Finance Department of the University for Professional Studies Accra (UPSA), Dr Edward Atta Botchway has been cited for plagiarism after it emerged that he had picked someone’s whole article for publication in the major newspapers as his own work.
Dr Atta Botchway who had caused to be published in his name, an article titled, “Why do our Fathers die so early?”, was found out to have plagiarized the said article in whole after the original author, one Rowland Ofori Larbi emerged to claim intellectual ownership.
The original author, who had gone online to attack the daily graphic for wrongfully attributing his intellectual property to another individual, was given a call by Graphic’s Editor who confirmed that the UPSA lecturer actually did submit the article as his. The graphic team even showed email correspondence between the lecturer and them explaining they were not at fault and had no reason to believe the lecturer plagiarized the whole article from someone.
In a related development, the UPSA has instituted an official investigation into the embarrassing episode. In a statement issued by the school, they have made it clear that they hold both students and lecturers to very high ethical standards and have therefore instituted investigations into the matter.
