The Wall Street Journal reports that a new study by Chinese researchers have revealed that the novel coronavirus could be found in the semen of patients even after they have been declared to have clinically recovered.
Volunteer patients who donated their samples several days after their symptoms had faded were found to show evidence of the virus in their semen.
According to the researchers, one patient whose symptoms had disappeared for 16 days, and who had been declared clinically recovered for 3 days, was found to have the virus in his semen after tests were carried out on him at Shangqui Municipal Hospital in Henan Province.
It would be recalled that doctors had earlier warned against sexual contact with persons who were showing symptoms of the disease, but that was to prevent transmission via droplets and not necessarily sexual transmission.
This new discovery means that the use of condoms or abstinence as a preventive measure is still very much safe considering the fact that a vaccine for the deadly virus is yet to be found.
