Kuwait Deports 245 Ghanaians Despite Coronavirus Lockdown and Closure of Borders

245 Ghanaians have been deported from Kuwait and are set to arrive in Ghana on Saturday, May 23rd 2020.

This is despite the fact that Ghana’s borders are closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The 245 are being deported for illegally staying in Kuwait.

Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah announced at a press briefing today that the government is granting a special permit to allow their deportation to take place.

They will arrive in the country on a chartered flight from Kuwait whose cost would be borne by the Kuwaiti government.

“The Government of Kuwait has informed the Government of Ghana of an intention to deport some 245 Ghanaians who are currently in Kuwait illegally. The Government of Kuwait has further requested permission from the Government of Ghana to bring these persons into the Ghanaian jurisdiction on Saturday 23rd May 2020,” Oppong Nkrumah said.

“The Government of Ghana has subsequently granted a special permit for the admission of the said deportees to Ghana. This deportation is to be executed via a special charter flight arrangement at the cost of the Kuwaiti Government,”  he added.

Oppong Nkrumah said upon arrival in the county, the deportees would be quarantined and tested for COVID-19.
